If you are going to be honest, you will have to tell him why. He deserves that at the very least. If it comes out of left field, he may be devastated. I mean he does love you. When relationships end, the feelings don't and the history can be source of pain or can cause a smile because of good memories. The hardest thing for him will be leaning how to fall out of love with you.





How much he will be hurt depends on the reason. Don't offer to be friends~~it is sort of insulting.

Well, there isn't much you can do to make it not hurt. But there are things you can go without saying that wouldn't make it hurt so much. First, don't make it seem like it is his fault, but don't say ';it isn't you, its me'; because everyone knows that ultimately means that it is definitely him. Other than that just be straight with him and im sure he will understand.
its like a band-aid it just need to be done. tell him you think that you are going your separate ways and that as much as you care for him you can't be together if the feelings of love are not strong enough to keep you there. if he tries to reign you back in just say its better for the both of you to move on now and not drag on the situation or feelings.

2. Do NOT answer a call, return a call, look at a txt msg. whatsoever. No return calls to him. NO CONTACT at all!





3. Try to be somewhere else than where he is, for several weeks. I.e., if you have any reason to go on a 2 week vacation, go. If you're a student, avoiding him may be difficult, but do everything possible never to have any eye contact with him and NEVER let him see you alone because he'll try to come talk to you.





After enough time passes and you have not heard from him, it's possible that he will give up and not contact you.





4. NEVER try to be his ';friend.'; He didn't want you as a friend then, and he obviously has ulterior motives in wanting to be your friend now. ';Ex's are Ex's for a reason.';
Impossible. You are just going to have to tell him that things just aren't what they should be between the two of you, and you don't feel it fair for you to continue the relationship with him, knowing that you are not happy any longer.
